Activities

Students

Archery – 3rd-5th grade students receive instruction in archery as a part of the PE curriculum.  In addition, interested students are allowed to participate in local and state competitions as a team.  In its first year, Logan’s team was third in the state.  The coach is our PE instructor, Tony Aull.

Honors Chorus – This is a select group of students from the Logan Leopard Singers that are chosen by the director to explore, experience and perform more intricate pieces according to their interests and abilities.  They are featured performers at our Singers concerts and are directed by our music teacher, Karen Harmon.

Logan Leopard Cubs – This is our 1st and 2nd grade chorus.  They rehearse in the mornings before school and have performed around the city.  In their first year, they received a Superior rating at the Carowinds Music Festival.  They are directed by our music teacher, Karen Harmon.

Logan Leopard Dancing Paws – Logan students all receive dance instruction during the school day, but interested students are able to participate in this group after school.  It is a contemporary jazz ensemble directed by Terrance Henderson, 2009-10 South Carolina Artist Fellow in Dance and director of Vibrations dance company.  The ensemble has performed on stage with professional dancers and was the only elementary ensemble featured in the district dance festival this year.

Logan Leopard Singers – This is our 3rd-5th grade chorus.  They perform a number of musical styles and have participated in the annual USC Tree-Lighting and the Jack Frost Music Festival at the state museum.  For two years in a row they have received a Superior rating at the Carowinds Music Festival.  They are directed by our music teacher, Karen Harmon.

Logan Leopard Steel Band – Students in grades 2-5 are invited to audition for the steel band in the fall and in the spring.  Dacey Bell is the director of the band.  He is on the music staff at Shandon Baptist Church and a member of the Island Close By steel band.  The group rehearses before school each day and has performed around the state.  The band was named “Best Band” in the Carolina Carillon Parade in 2008, competing against a number of high school bands.

Piano Keyboard – Students that are interested in learning to play the piano can participate in this class that is held twice a week before school.  As a part of our music classes, students are introduced to the electronic piano keyboards in a lab setting, but this class allows them to experience more about the piano as a performance instrument.  There is usually a recital at the end of the year.  Our music teacher, Karen Harmon, directs this group.

Safety Patrol/School Store – Students recommended by their teachers in fourth and fifth grade may choose to participate as school leaders through helping with arrival and dismissal, sponsoring safety activities such as our “Seat Belt Drive” in the mornings.  They greet students, parents and staff members at the doors in the mornings and put up the flag each day.  Several days a week they run a school store where students can purchase school supplies.  The funds are used to support the program.  The group is sponsored by our Parent Educator/In-School-Suspension Supervisor, Mattie Wheeler and our School Resource Officer, Officer Todd Minemier.

Strings/Orchestra – Twice a week, fourth and fifth grade students that are interested may receive strings instruction.  Violins, violas and cellos are available.  Students usually perform several times during the year.  Students may provide their own instruments, or there are some available at the school.  The actual time for the classes depends on the instructor’s schedule with other schools and is announced each year.  Jolene Walter is the instructor.

WLGN News Team – These fifth grade students learn all about the broadcasting capabilities and on-air skills needed to put together a daily newscast with school announcements, weather, special guests and recognition of holidays and special events.  Students serve as technical assistants, camerapersons and anchorpersons.  They are sponsored by Angela Bennett, information technology specialist, Andrea Mattress, fifth grade and Shelia Wasington, secretary bookkeeper.

 Community Involvement

Recycling Team – Our fifth grade classes participate each year in sponsoring recycling around the school.  Each office and classroom has a recycling bin for paper that is collected every other week and there are receptacles around the building for cans and plastic bottles.

Ronald McDonald House – We have a large collection bin in the cafeteria to receive the “pop-tops” from canned drinks.  These are collected in support of the Ronald McDonald House, where families can stay when children are hospitalized for extended periods.

Food Drives – At least twice during the school year food drives are help to help support local emergency food banks. At Thanksgiving, canned goods and paper goods are collected for the Columbia Metro Association Emergency Food Pantry or Harvest Hope.  We also participate in the district Martin Luther King Food Drive in January.

Sock & Mitten Tree – Just before winter break, students are encouraged to bring new socks, mittens and caps in children’s sizes to decorate a tree in the front hall.  At the end of the drive the items are boxed and delivered to Cooperative Ministries.

Parents/Community Members

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) – Parents, families, friends, staff members and community members are all eligible to join the PTA to support the school program.  At monthly planning meetings, the executive board plans for activities and fund-raisers.  These meetings are always open.  We also have Family Night activities scheduled periodically designed to involve and inform family members.  Please see the PTA page on this website for more information.  We are affiliated with the national organization.

School Improvement Council (SIC) – Parents and staff members are both elected and appointed to this legislatively mandated organization.  Community members are also appointed.  The group meets once a month to discuss school achievement and school improvement.  This is the body that helps the school administration make plans for improvement, address parent and community concerns and plan for the expenditure of state funds when available.  The council can also adopt other projects as they see fit to improve the school’s programs and effectiveness.  Please see the SIC page on this website for meeting times, agendas and minutes.

Volunteer Program – Parents and other family members as well as members of the community are invited to volunteer in classrooms, the media center, the office or as tutors, mentors, Lunch Buddies, or field trip chaperones.  In fact, if you have an area or interest or expertise, we can probably find a way to put you to work.  Everyone volunteering must have a SLED check performed and some orientation.  If you are interested, Shelia Washington, our secretary –bookkeeper, coordinates those programs.

Books & Breakfast/Lunch & Learn – Watch for these activities scheduled throughout the year as opportunities to meet with other parents, get information about the school and about community resources available to parents and families.  As indicated, there is a meal associated with the meeting and every effort is made to present a lot of information in a reasonable amount of time.
